It seems like every few minutes we’re bombarded with a new parenting method. Whether it’s permissive parenting, authoritative parenting, uninvolved parenting, Helicopter Parenting…it seems impossible to keep up with it all. Now, a new method is starting to circulate around and is gaining a lot of traction, especially with celebrity moms like Chrissy Teigen and Shay Mitchell.

So what exactly is intuitive parenting? Well, simply put, it’s a hands-pff approach. Teigen and Mitchell recently sat down for a conversation with reproductive psychiatrist Alexandra Sacks, MD, for a conversation about parenthood. When it came down to it, the two moms agreed that they both prefer a relaxed mindset when it comes to mothering their children.

Teigen opened up about her experience: “I didn’t read any books, I didn’t do anything. I didn’t want to read something and have it stuck in my head that that’s the way it had to be done.” She continued by saying that she likes the “wait and see” approach, meaning she likes to let situations play out naturally and adjust from there.

Mitchel chimed in on the conversation by saying: “I did one birthing class, which was a mistake because I saw a real birth and was like, ‘Oh my gosh’. I’m going with what feels right for me. And if I have any questions then I’ll ask people who are going through it.”

Sacks weighed in to explain that this style of parenting is called intuitive parenting. She explained: “The truth is that parenting is not—and never could be—a ‘one size fits all’ enterprise. No product or uni-dimensional parenting style could possibly match your child’s unique learning ability and temperament—or your own parenting ‘comfort zone.'”

In the same vein, author of The Intuitive Parent, Stephen Camarata, PhD, explained more in an article with Psychology Today. He said, “What is needed is a readily adaptable and flexible approach to lifelong learning that fits you and your child… Intuitive parenting aims to arm parents with the confidence and knowledge they need to quit worrying and maximize the beneficial impact of the time they have with their children.”

He went on to say that since kids naturally let parents know what they need, parents can intuitively understand and respond to their kids’ individual cues, just like what Teigen and Mitchell are striving for. As Mitchell said, “Everybody’s experience and journey with [motherhood] is completely different. That’s why it was important for me to share my own experience, because if anyone had a similar way of feeling, they can relate.”

Teigen agreed, saying: “Some days are harder than others, and you’re looking for someone to tell you that that it’s okay to lock the bathroom door for once.Like, I want privacy!” As self-deprecating as I am, I feel like I got the mom thing down.”
