Name That Skipper!
Some viewers probably forgot that the Skipper actually had a name. Yes, we’re serious. Back during the pilot in 1964, his name was announced. It’s Jonas Grumby. Do you recall when Skipper (played by Alan Hale Jr.) passed away on Gilligan’s Island? When the characters scattered Skipper’s ashes, someone remarked, “It’s what ‘The Skipper’ would have wanted.” Maybe they also could not recall his real name!
Breaking The Fourth Wall
Now, first we need to tell those who don’t know, what the fourth wall is in film/television. Basically, it’s when the character eliminates any space between characters and the audience or even crew. So, on Gilligan’s Island, Alan Hale Jr., who played the Skipper, was famous for breaking the fourth wall. He did this when he’d stare right into the camera in order to make a certain face. Well, at the time, this wasn’t so common. Speaking of fourth, Gilligan’s Island did have plans for a fourth film, but we’ll get there.
