Most people know of the iconic historical documents and images available from the past. You’ve likely seen the American soldiers at Iwo Jima who raised the flag in World War II, even if you’re not familiar with the photographer or story behind it.

These things stand the test of time because they’re so iconic. However, some photographs aren’t as famous, though they can still help us see what historical events happened and are fascinating in and of themselves. In fact, the photos give everyone a glimpse into a world that’s moved on through technological advancements and the like.

Titanic’s Staircase

Everyone knows that the Titanic sunk in 1912, and photography wasn’t very popular at the time. Though we can’t see the Titanic’s staircase, the RMS Olympic has a nearly identical one. It was grand, and now it’s sitting on the ocean floor.

Violet Jessop was the stewardess and nurse for the RMS Olympic and RMS Titanic and survived both sinkings. The Olympic hit the HMS Hawke back in 1911, and the Titanic sank in 1912. In both cases, she helped others find a lifeboat.
