Chief planner Thomas Andrews had the responsibility of supervising the development and construction of the RMS Titanic. He had grand plans for luxurious features for the ship, but Ismay quickly informed his that their budget was quite tight and spending had to be cut immediately.

As the RMS Titanic was being constructed, England was facing a turbulent time, as the national coal strike of 1912 was taking place. Workers went on strike in order to secure minimum wage. The strike lasted for 37 days and eventually led to the first minimum wage to be established after the Coal Mines Act was passed.
