Something that may surprise Americans is the fact that in many other countries, it is not normal to see TV commercials for prescription medications. Europeans are pretty shocked by this, especially since these commercials can be seen by young children who will grow up to be dependent on many of these pills.

Why 21?

This one is pretty well known, but it is still worth noting that it is pretty shocking to most non-Americans that the legal drinking age is 21. This became the drinking age after advocacy group Mothers Against Drunk Driving (MADD) lobbied to change laws around driving under the influence, and led to the increase in legal drinking age.
